Buckwheat girl on the mountain of Prisank
Buckwheat girl - a giant girl - was so big that when she wanted to drink from the Sava river, she stood with one foot on Smarna gora and the other on Smarjeta gora near Kranj. We can still see one of her ribs in the church of Crngrob near Skofja Loka
We can also see the face of another buckwheat girl. Her stone face looks down on us from the West face of Prisank near Vršic pass. She was good-hearted and she liked to help people who transported goods from the Sava to the Soca valley. She pushed their horses uphill. Whenever they lost their way in snow, fog and wind, buckwheat girl showed them the right way. The grateful travellers kept bringing her wine, bread and cheese and put this food on the top of Vršic, so buckwheat girl was never hungry.
Buckwheat girl was also “rojenica” (a woman who foretells a man’s fate). One day she visited a young mother in Trenta. She had a baby son. Buckwheat girl foretold the baby would grow up into a brave hunter who would dare to shoot even the miraculous male goat with golden horns - Zlatorog. In those days Zlatorog looked after the white goats and white fairies in the Triglav mountains.
When buckwheat girl came home to Prisank, her sisters heard of her terrible prophecy. They were so angry that they punished her by turning her into rock.
Today her face looks down from the Prisank cliffs with big, sad, stony eyes. But her prophecy came true.
